Life Safe
Charleston Fire Department and other area fire departments participate in this program to assist local businesses in keeping their employees and customers safe in the event of an emergency.
Seminar June 3rd 7:30am Columbia Gas
The Life Safe program consists of the following criteria:
Fire Wardens
A fire warden is a designated person, who has appropriate training and is responsible for initiating and coordinating internal emergency actions. They are also responsible for implementing the evacuation of a designated area during an emergency. The number of fire wardens should be based on the number of occupants and physical structure of the building. The fire wardens should recieve a minimum of eight hours of training each year, including first aid/CPR, fire extinguisher training, chemical emergencies and violence in the workplace.
Fire Drills
All participants should have a minimum of two emergency evacuation drills annually. The safety management representative should prepare a written record of each drill, the date it was held and complete an evaluation form.
Evacuation Plan
A building evacuation plan shall be developed, implemented and submitted to the Life Safe Director.
Building Inspection
An annual building inspection by the fire department is required. These inspections are conducted using local, state and national standards.
After submission of application and verification of criteria, fire wardens will be invited to the Life Safe seminars held in April and June each year. The seminars are free and include key note speakers on various life safety topics as well as hands-on training. In October, the Life Safe comittee sponsors a luncheon for the safety managers of each building and Life Safe participation certificates are awarded.
